Guidance on Handling Traumatic Data Disclosures
Sexual violence, domestic violence, and stalking are common and pervasive experiences. The expanding integration of information technology tools and services into every facet of life means that sexual and domestic violence is frequently experienced in association with those tools and services. As a result, technology companies regularly receive communications from users about these traumatic experiences. Companies should encourage and handle these sensitive communications and associated information with care and in accordance with key principles.
This resource, developed jointly with the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), elaborates on these key principles for technology companies handling disclosures of traumatic experiences. It provides guidance on receiving disclosures, setting expectations, response, information handling, transparency reporting, and creating safe and supportive ecosystems.
