In August, approximately 300 attendees joined NNEDV’s Safety Net team for our annual Tech Summit, held in-person in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year’s summit was “Centering Survivors in a Tech-Saturated World.” With topics ranging from tech safety planning, to the intersection of trafficking and technology, to AI privacy concerns, presenters addressed the challenges and benefits of new and emerging technology while consistently centering survivor autonomy, safety, and empowerment.

The three-day conference featured 27 guest presenters, who along with the Safety Net team facilitated 26 sessions, including two panel discussions with representatives from major tech companies such as Meta, Google, and Uber, as well as the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative. Panelists shared information and answered questions on topics including supporting survivors of NCII, data privacy, AI, help-seeking services, and trauma-informed practices. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the panels, sharing that “I really appreciated the panels and hearing from big technology companies and the impact that advocates have had in changing policies and increasing safety features.” Some other sessions were:

  • Civil Remedies in Uncivil Times

  • Empowered Safety and Privacy Planning

  • Tech and Teens

  • Supporting Survivors in the Digital Divide

  • Identifying Stalkerware

  • Safeguarding Older Adults from Digital Abuse

  • And many more!

Perhaps the most successful part of the summit was creating space for advocates, tech specialists, and representatives from tech companies to be together in person to network, connect, and learn from one another. Of the hundreds of evaluations received, over half of respondents identified the opportunity to connect, share resources, and learn from other participants and presenters from across the country, and even the globe, as being their favorite part of the summit. One attendee shared, “It was perhaps the best training/conference/summit I've attended. The intersection of tech, safety, privacy and ensuring access was top notch in how you all handled it. I walked away with tangible tools and am grateful I was able to attend. Thank you for producing quality work and sharing it with others!” We also received comments saying, “The connections I made were the most valuable part of the conference for me,” and “I loved the chance to speak with folks from other states and have side conversations to go more in depth with the presentation topics, share situations, and problem solve.”

We are grateful for our time together, for an amazing summit, and for all the presenters and attendees who took time away from busy schedules to participate. And last, but certainly not least, we are grateful for the victim service providers who work tirelessly to serve survivors, and who are willing to navigate the complexity of technology to learn how to best support survivor safety! We are excited to take all that we have learned and start planning for next year!
