The resources below are aimed at technologists and tech companies. They provide guidance as to best practices on safety by design, privacy by design, trust and safety response, and other tech design and operations issues that affect survivors of domestic/dating violence, sexual violence, stalking, or human trafficking. According to research, in the US, two in five women and one in four men in the US have been impacted by intimate partner violence, while one in three women and one in six men have been stalked. Survivors are not a niche population - they are a large fraction of the users of any given technology product or service.

Our Work with Technology Companies & Technologists

As a team focused on the intersection of technology and safety, The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)'s Safety Net Project provides technology companies and technologists with valuable perspectives on the unique impact of their products and services on victims and survivors of abuse, include how they can be both misused and strategically used.  With the goal of helping technology companies to support survivors and provide their users with safer products and services, Safety Net works with companies in several ways:

  •  Policy Advocacy and Advisory Roles

    • Safety Net works with technology companies to develop policies and practices that prioritize the safety and privacy of users. Our advocacy often takes the form of membership on advisory boards, enabling us to provide ongoing support and assistance to tech companies as they implement and refine safety measures on their platforms.

  • Partnerships

    • Safety Net maintains partnerships with leading technology companies to collaborate on projects that benefit survivors of abuse. Projects range from donation programs to the development of tools and resources such as privacy guides, safety checklists, and reporting mechanisms.

  • Training and Education

    • Safety Net provides training and resources to technology companies on the unique challenges faced by victims and survivors of abuse. This includes education on the dynamics of abuse, how platforms can be misused by abusers, and how features can be implemented to enhance user safety and well-being.

Technology companies incorporate considerations around abuse and safety into product design and implementation to not only minimize opportunities for abuse, but also increase safety, privacy, and well-being. Safety Net recognizes that safe access to technology is a fundamental need for anyone experiencing abuse. By working with technology companies, Safety Net supports survivors of abuse, and advances NNEDV’s mission of creating a social, political, and economic environment in which domestic violence no longer exists.
